'God never gives someone a gift they are not capable of receiving.' Pope Francis
Maths is taught through a daily lesson focusing on nine core themes: Number, Place Value & Algebra, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Division, Fractions, Decimals & Percentages, Ratio & Proportion, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics, Mental Strategies and Problem Solving and Reasoning.
At Holy Family, we follow White Rose Hub Maths Scheme. This is supplemented by NCETM Mastering Number materials with the focus on counting, automaticity and subitising. Children are taught about the relationships between and within numbers and understand with complete security the composition of numbers from 1 - 10 and beyond.
Click on the curriculum overview below to find out what your child will be expected to achieve in the curriculum.
We also follow a programme called Big Maths, which supports the teaching of number skills through counting, learning key number facts, applying what we know to different contexts and calculations. The daily sessions last 20 - 30 minutes each and the children attempt to beat their best score in a weekly 'Big Maths Beat That' test.
In Key Stage 2, we teach times tables through Times Tables Rockstars. The programme gives children the opportunity to pit their arithmetical wits against themselves and increase their pace and accuracy each week. Some of our children have competed in regional competitions. Ask your child about TT Rockstars!
Maths Visual Calculation Policy
Holy Family follows its own calculation policy, which breaks down into steps the different mathematical processes which all children need to understand and use. All classes follow the approach, which should ensure continuity of provision and a common approach to arithmetic and number.
In addition, a Bar Modelling Policy has been created to outline for staff, children and parents how we teach the various arithmetic processes that children will use when reasoning or problem solving. This can be found by clicking on the link below .
In order to use the maths visual calculation policy to support your child with their maths work, click on the link below which will take you through the steps taught in school.
