Summer term 2024

As we return to school after Easter the Church is still celebrating this great event. The focus of this term’s work in Religious Education is the role the Holy Spirit plays in our lives. We will be studying the three themes of Pentecost (Serving), Reconciliation (Inter-relating) and Universal Church (World). The children will also spend one week studying Judaism.

In English we will be reading poetry, adventure and mystery stories as well as texts linked to our creative curriculum. We will look at speech marks, ways of joining sentences and the use of adverbs in writing. We will build on the skills introduced over the past two terms to write longer pieces that can be organised into paragraphs. In spelling we will continue to look at the relationship between sounds and letters, as well as using suffixes, spellings that end in –tion, the ch sound, ey, sc and eigh sounds, the use of the apostrophe, words with same spellings but different meanings and practice joining letters.

In maths we will continue to recap adding and subtracting three digit numbers using column methods, use column methods for multiplying two digit numbers by 1 digit numbers and division with partitioning using part whole models. We continue working on fractions of shapes and numbers, practice telling the time, look at angles and turn in shapes and in measurement consider mass and capacity.

In science topic we will learn about what plants need to grow well and why it is important that they do. We will link the study of plants to the work of the artist Vincent Van Gogh. We will also learn about light and how shadows are formed.

In our creative curriculum topic Tomb Raiders, we will learn about life in Ancient Egypt by looking at the evidence that has survived, artefacts and information on the internet. In art we will be looking at colour mixing and create images in the style of  Van Gogh and Seurat using oil pastels and paint. We will continue to explore colour, shape and pattern to create our own designs. We will use a word processing programme to combine text and graphics again linked to work on Ancient Egypt and learn and perform songs. In topic work we will create 3d objects using different media. This will give us the opportunity to link art through designing jewellery, make and evaluate artefacts and use geography skills to locate places on maps and atlases.

In music all the learning is focused around one song: Bringing us together. The material presents an integrated approach to music where games, the interrelated dimensions of music (pulse, rhythm, pitch etc.), singing and playing instruments are all linked.

PE is on a Tuesday. In PE we will develop the skills needed to play team games. In Rounders, we will practising bowling, batting and fielding skills and developing awareness of rules and tactics. We will also focus on health related fitness activities, circuit training and prepare for our sports day at the end of the summer term.
