Welcome to Year One. We have lots of exciting learning ahead of us!
This term our topic will be ‘It’s Playtime!’. Please click on the link below to see a copy of our Curriculum Overview.
Religion
This term we will be studying the three themes of:
Families - God’s love and care for every family
Belonging- Baptism: an invitation to belong to God’s family
Waiting- Advent: a time to look forward to Christmas
English
We will be sharing and discussing a range of high-quality texts that are linked to our topic to develop our love of reading.
We will be learning how to sound out and blend words using our phonic knowledge and practise reading and spelling common exception words.
There are lots of free resources to support your child’s learning on the Oxford Owl website: https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/reading-schemes-oxford-levels/read-write-inc-phonics-guide/ and also free games on: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources
We will be learning how to compose a sentence orally and how to record our ideas in writing using our new phonic knowledge.
Mathematics
We will be developing our understanding of place value and using different methods and equipment to add and subtract numbers up to 20. We will also be learning how to recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes, including rectangles, squares, circles and triangles, cuboids, pyramids and spheres. In class we use the White Rose Maths 1-minute maths app. You can download this free app to help your child to build greater number confidence and fluency. https://whiterosemaths.com/resources/1-minute-maths#download
Spelling
We will have a spelling check every Friday. Each week, the children will focus on a few spelling rules which can be found in their Home School Communication Book.
PE
PE is every Monday afternoon. Please ensure that your child wears their PE kit to school (white t-shirt, blue or black shorts/joggers/leggings, school sweatshirt/cardigan and pumps/trainers).They will remain in their PE kits all day.
Reading
Reading Records - Home / School Communication Book
Your child will be sent home with 3 reading books each night. It is important that parents understand the reason for each of the books and how they can be used and enjoyed at home
Phonetically decodable book – you child will be given a Read Write Inc story book. This is phonetically decodable, which means that your child will be able to read the book independently by breaking down the words into sounds and blending to read each of the words. They will be able to do this on their own as the sounds in the book match the sounds they have learned in school.
Sharing Book – this book is age appropriate for your child but will contain some words and sounds unfamiliar to them. This book is to share at home and can be read together. Parents and children may take it in turns to read parts of the book but your child will need help as they will not be able to read the book completely independently. These books will help expose your child to words and vocabulary that will support their reading comprehension, spelling and in their writing.
Reading for Pleasure Book – your child will select a book of their choosing which will be read for fun and enjoyment. This may be a book they have read before or something easier than they would usually read. As well as learning to read fluently and with understanding, it is important that children have the freedom to choose books to read for pleasure.
Please read with your child at home every day and sign their Home School Communication Book.
