Autumn term 2024
Religion
We will be looking at what it means to be part of a family and especially the Christian family. We will learn about promises made at baptism and confirmation. We will look at remembrance, the work of CAFOD and as we move towards Christmas, we will be thinking about the season of Advent and how we prepare for the visit of God the person of Jesus.
English
We will be reading the openings from different types of story, especially stories in familiar settings as well as ways of extending sentences. As well as reading stories set in the Stone Age, we will write in different styles and try to emulate the author. We will read different types of poetry and practice reading aloud. We will be taking part in drama and reading simple play scripts. We will link to our creative curriculum when we look at non-fiction texts about the Stone Age.
Maths
In maths we will recap concepts learnt in year 2, we will be learning to read and write numbers to 999 and understand the place value of each digit. We will compare numbers and look at different ways of representing them. We will also be revisiting and developing our understanding of addition and subtraction using larger numbers than when we were in year 2. We will also be learning our 3, 4 and 8 times tables.
Science
During our science topic, we will be learning about rocks and soils, compare, and group them based on their appearance and simple physical properties. We will study how fossils are formed and learn the names of some different rocks. In our second topic, we will study forces and learn about magnets.
Creative curriculum
In topic work, we will be studying the history of Stone Age Man until the Iron Age and finding out about the achievements of Early Man in our topic Rock ‘n’ Roll. We will look at timelines, what we mean by sources of evidence and develop an understanding of chronology. We will link our topic to picture books and stories. This will give us the opportunity to link art through designing jewellery and studying cave paintings, design technology to make and evaluate artefacts and make links with our science curriculum.
PE
PE is on a Tuesday. In PE will be focussing upon athletic skills (fitness skills) of running, jumping and practicing throwing techniques as well as long jump, hurdles and javelin. This is to develop core strength and improving stamina. We will aim to reflect and celebrate successes as well as giving ourselves challenge. Later on in the term, we will be focussing upon rugby. In rugby will be familiarising ourselves with handling the ball as well as learning how to run, pass, receive, attack, defend, make effective use of space and then apply these skills in different situations.
